Special Research Programs

  • Special Research Programs (SRPs) exist at UC Irvine to provide a structure for collaborative research activities that do not fit the definition and purpose of an Organized Research Unit, a Campus Center, or a School Center. An SRP may, for example, be formed in response to a special funding opportunity, as the campus branch of a University of California research program, or as part of a federal or state governmental initiative. SRPs may be established for three or five years or, in special circumstances, an indefinite period.

Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center

The vision of UCI’s Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center (SCRC) is to progress the understanding and therapeutic potential of stem cell science toward the improvement and relief of human disease. Development of SCRC is built upon the campus’s long-standing strengths in neuroscience, developmental biology, and pharmacology, and benefits from faculty collaborations with other UCI Organized Research Units and Centers. Sue and Bill Gross Hall: A CIRM Institute was dedicated in May 2010 and is one of twelve buildings in the state funded by taxpayer support through the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. “Gross Hall” is home to UCI’s world-class faculty, clinicians, and training fellows in stem cell research, and includes a core lab facility outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment critical to human embryonic stem cell research.

      Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

Founded in 1972 the TLG represents the first effort in the Humanities to produce a large digital corpus of literary texts. Since its inception the project has collected and digitized most texts written in Greek from Homer (8 c. B.C.) to the fall of Byzantium in AD 1453 and beyond. Its goal is to create a comprehensive digital library of Greek literature from antiquity to the present era. TLG research activities combine the traditional methodologies of philological and literary study with the most advanced features of information technology.

      UCI-NATURE

UC Irvine is fortunate to have a number of outstanding facilities for field-based outreach, teaching and research. Within the UCI Office of Research and under the direct responsibility of UCI-NATURE are three UC Natural Reserve System sites (San Joaquin Marsh Reserve located on campus; Burns-Piñon Ridge Reserve located three hours from campus; and Steele/Burnand Anza Borrego Desert Research Center located three hours from campus, and also three hours from Burns-Piñon Ridge Reserve) and the UCI Ecological Preserve (on campus). UCI-NATURE is also responsible for maintaining a partnership with the Crystal Cove Alliance for the shared use of a Research Cottage within Crystal Cove State Park. Finally, UCI-NATURE will play a role in coordinating the management of the Greenhouse, Arboretum and Herbarium (on campus) that are each held within the School of Biological Sciences.

University of California Humanities Research Institute

Based on the UC Irvine campus, UCHRI serves all ten campuses in the UC system, interacting with UC campus humanities centers, other campus research centers, and with individual faculty to promote collaborative, interdisciplinary humanities research and pedagogy throughout the University of California system and within the larger communities they inhabit. Through the administration of its own funding programs and those of the UC Humanities Network, UCHRI supports and showcases fellows, working groups, seminars, conferences, workshops and other research formations, on topics traditional to the humanities in disciplines such as literature, philosophy, classics, languages, and history, as well as the pressing human dimensions that arise in the social and natural sciences, technology, art, medicine, and the professions. Stressing interdisciplinary research, UCHRI bridges gaps between disciplines across the humanities and human sciences and seeks to overcome the intellectual and institutional barriers that can separate the humanities from other fields.
