RE: Defense Science Study Group

The Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) has invited Chancellor Cicerone to nominate one or two members of the UCI faculty to participate in the Defense Science Study Group (DSSG) program. This program, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), offers young professors of science, engineering and mathematics an opportunity to explore key issues in national security, particularly those that involve science and technology.

Approximately fifteen candidates will be selected for membership to a two-year program, requiring about 20 days per year, divided into two weeklong sessions during the summer and two 3-day sessions during the academic year. Members focus on defense policy, related research and development, and the systems, missions, and operations of the armed forces and the intelligence community. Members receive a stipend and are reimbursed for expenses.

The selection criteria are: a faculty member is the sciences, engineering or mathematics (the DSSG is trying to increase representation in biological sciences and biotechnology, and especially encourage the nomination of qualified women and minorities); outstanding academic accomplishments and likely future leader in their field; under 40 (preferably); able to get a security clearance (must be a U.S. citizen); tenured (preferably); broad interests; personality well-suited to DSSG interactions and activities; good chance that interest in national security issues would continue after completing the program; research interests at least broadly relevant to defense issues.

A nomination from UCI must be submitted by the Chancellor. Please inform faculty in your school about this opportunity. Those who are interested in being considered should send a letter of interest and abbreviated CV to my office by March 31. The deadline for official nominations is April 18, 2005.

For additional information, please visit the website, http://dssg.ida.org. Questions about the internal review procedures may be directed to Mia Larson, x4-2898 or malarson@uci.edu.
