RE: Call for Nominations for the 2006 NSF Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics & Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) – NSF 04-525

The PAESMEM program, administered by NSF on behalf of the White House, seeks to identify outstanding mentoring efforts or programs that enhance the participation of groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (i.e., women, minorities, and persons with disabilities). The awardees serve as leaders in the national effort to develop fully the Nation's human resources in these fields. Luis Villarreal received this award in 2000 and Martha Mecartney received it in 2003. This solicitation is unchanged from last year.

Approximately ten Individual awards and ten Institutional awards will be granted. Each award of $10,000 is expected to be used to continue the recognized activities. Recipients will be invited to an awards ceremony at the White House and additional meetings and workshops in Washington D.C.

UCI is permitted only one nomination for either an Individual Award or an Institutional Award, but not both. Therefore, I am requesting that preliminary nominations be received in my office by January 13, 2006. The submission process allows nominations by a colleague, administrator, institution or student. The nominees must have served in a mentoring role for at least five years. Details on nomination criteria are available online, http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?nsf04525. For the internal review, preliminary nominations should include:
  • Individual Nomination – A letter that describes and documents the mentoring activities that constitute the basis for nomination, the nominee's CV, and a list of students mentored. The nomination must clearly delineate the achievements of the individual as separate from those of the institution.
  • Institutional Nomination – A nomination letter that describes and documents the mentoring activities, a list of activities bearing on students mentored, and materials documenting the program’s sustained achievements. The nomination must reflect the organizational as different from individual achievements.
An ad hoc committee of the Council on Research, Computing and Library Resources will conduct the internal review. The nominator will be notified in ample time to prepare the full nomination to meet NSF’s March 7, 2006 deadline. Please contact Mia Larson at x4-2898 if you have questions about the internal review procedures.
