Review of Protocols Tabled to Subcommittee
After review at the full committee meeting, protocols and modifications will be assigned to one of four different categories:
Approved - No further action needed. The IACUC Administrator prepares an approval letter and processes the approval.
Tabled Administratively - The protocol or modification can be approved without further IACUC subcommittee review. The IACUC Administrator prepares and sends a memo to the Lead Researcher asking for additional information; once the information has been received, the approval will be processed.
Tabled to Subcommittee - The IACUC Administrator prepares and sends a memo to the Lead Researcher that summarizes the committee's discussion of the protocol or modification request and asks for additional information and a revised protocol submission. Once the revised submission is received in the IACUC Administrative Office, a copy is sent to the Primary and Secondary reviewers (plus any other committee members that were added to the subcommittee at the meeting) via email attachment. The IACUC members then review the revised protocol and advise the IACUC Administrator via return email when it is ready to approve, or request additional information.
Resubmission - The IACUC Administrator prepares a detailed memo to the Lead Researcher explaining all of the changes that must be made to the protocol before approval can be granted. The LR is then asked to resubmit the entire protocol (original and copies) for the next regularly scheduled IACUC meeting. If possible, the same two committee members that reviewed the protocol will do so again at the next meeting.
Things to Remember when Conducting Subcommittee Reviews:
- It's helpful if the IACUC member retains a copy of all tabled protocols on which s/he served as primary or secondary reviewer for reference purposes during subcommittee review.
- Contact the Administrator if you have any questions about the Lead Researcher's response to the IACUC memo.
- Reply promptly to all requests for subcommittee review - remember, someone else's research is depending on you.
