The Director of Research Development for the Schools of Physical and Biological Sciences has 25 years of academic and industrial research training and experience, and over a dozen years experience with research grant writing and administration. He has significantly participated in the coordination and writing of funded grants from the NIH, NSF, DOD (DARPA), the Dept of Education, the State of California, CIRM, HHMI and other Foundations and private donors. The projects he has been involved in include a broad range of interdisciplinary research proposals, Center grants, training grants, SBIR's, instrument, facilities and building construction grants. His background in experimental physics, neuroscience and biotech small business allow him to contribute to the scientific aspects of proposals, as well as providing editing, structural, and general preparation support.

Casandra (Cassie) Rauser received her Ph.D. (2005) in Biological Sciences from the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the UCI. After receiving her doctorate, she managed a 250+ ha (600+ acres) preserve in Tamarindo, Costa Rica where she honed her skills organizing, collaborating, teaching and grant writing while working with businesses, schools, public and private organizations and community members both nationally and internationally. Throughout her professional career she has conducted research and published well over a dozen scientific articles in the areas of behavioral ecology, evolution, genetics, and cancer. She has co-authored a book entitled "Does Aging Stop?" to be published in 2011. Additionally, she has worked several years as an editor of scientific articles written by non-native English speakers that have gone on to be published in journals such as Nature Genetics. She has personally obtained funding from the NSF, NIH-NCI, Sigma Xi, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), and the Ellison Medical Foundation, among others, and has served on both NSF and AAUW review panels. Together, her academic and professional experiences allow her to contribute to the scientific and technical aspects of grants, as well as assist in editing and the general preparation of proposals.

Dr. Lori E. Greene received her Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. Her dissertation research focused on nanotechnology and solar energy conversion. Dr. Greene has worked in research development at UCI for over two years as the Director of Research Development and Outreach for the Center for Solar Energy in the School of Physical Sciences. Prior to coming to UCI, she worked as a project leader at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, CO. Working at NREL, Dr. Greene was exposed to top-notch research going on at the national lab and companies in photovoltaics and other renewable energy technologies. Dr. Greene's work experiences, strong research background, and skills in project management will be highly valuable as she leads and develops major disciplinary and multidisciplinary grant proposals for the School of Physical Sciences.

Dr. Berg earned his PhD degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Calgary, and trained as a postdoctoral fellow in the University of Auckland Department of Molecular Medicine. He then led a laboratory and clinical cancer research program developing experimental cancer therapeutics at the London Regional Cancer Center in Ontario, Canada. His academic career includes over 20 publications and $1.5 million in funded grants to support his cancer research. Prior to joining our team, he was an extramural awards analyst with the UC Irvine Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he worked closely with cancer center members to facilitate their individual and collaborative grant applications. Since arriving at UC Irvine, he has made substantial contributions to 20 full NIH grant submissions and 20 administrative supplement and foundation grant proposals. He is dedicated to helping Clinicians and Researchers throughout the School of Medicine obtain funding for clinical translational research at UC Irvine, with the ultimate goal of bringing new and better treatments to our patients.

Lucinda Kessler brings to the Office of Research Development many years of experience in the public sector. She has worked in all capacities of fund development, including writing and submitting local and federal grant proposals. As a project manager for non-profit organizations, Lucinda has taken many projects from inception to successful completion. Lucinda is honored to have received training fellowships from California Tomorrow and WGBH-Boston. Her background includes writing and producing radio programs for public radio both in California and on the national level.
