Research Development in the Office of Research

The Research Development team in the Office of Research (OR), is charged with advancing and supporting sponsored research across all of UCI. We are especially focused on large or complex, interdisciplinary projects that involve multiple faculty, departments or research units.

Our team works with and supports individual school Research Development Officers (RDOs), as they work with their faculty to develop winning grant proposals.  We also work closely with the Corporate and Foundation Relations team in UCI Advancement which provides support for non-federal funding program opportunities.

Our Services

Identifying Funding Opportunities

We have gathered a curated list of funding search tools that cover the gamut of research sponsors: government, non-profit, corporate and international.

Proposal Development, Advice & Strategy

The Directors of Research Development (RDOs) across campus work with faculty to help with funding searches, provide grantsmanship advice and provide other support in proposal development. Need help? Please contact the RDO in your School to set up a meeting. If your School does not have an RDO, please contact Director of Research Development Michael Gallo.

Sources of Funding

Sources of Funding

External Funding Opportunities

External Funding Opportunities refer to any research sponsor (such as the federal government, non-profit organizations, and corporations).  The "external" part refers to where the funding is coming from as well as where an application is submitted, in both cases meaning  external to UCI.

We have put together a non-exhaustive list of sponsors, with some brief information on what kind of project they fund. Please visit our External Funding page for more information.

Limited Funding Opportunities

“Limiteds” bridge a gap between External and Internal funding in that they are externally sponsored grants that require an internal selection process, usually because the sponsor limits the number of applications that can be submitted by UCI. Interested applicants submit a pre-proposal to the Office of Research (unless otherwise indicated), where a  committee reviews submission and makes a recommendation to the Vice Chancellor for Research about which proposal should go forward from UCI.

Limited opportunities are advertised on our fundopp.uci.edu website, along with internal funding competitions.

Internal Funding Opportunities

Internal Funding Opportunities are, as the name implies, grants internal to UCI because they are offered by a UCI unit to UCI personnel. The selection process may vary depending on which UCI entity is offering the funding and managing the competition, but typically this is a one-stage process where selected applicants are awarded funding directly from the entity holding the competition.

We have put together a non-exhaustive list of recurring internal opportunities to give you an idea of what types of funding are available withing UCI's research enterprise.
