Program Description

The 2017-18 UCI Research Infrastructure Program is aimed at strengthening the campus’ functional capabilities that enable cutting edge research and discovery.  It is anticipated that 10 or more awards of up to $50,000 each will be made this year.

Guiding Principles

The overall goal of the UCI Research Infrastructure Program is to support instruments and facilities that are shared among multiple investigators or those that are formally designated as Shared Facilities. Other important considerations include anticipated investigator usage, plans for making the resource widely accessible, support of the administering unit, and the overall feasibility of the proposed plan.

UC Irvine faculty members may apply. Applications aimed at educational or service missions are not eligible.

Use of Funds

Award funds will be provided on a one-time basis for uses including, but not limited to: instrument acquisition, shared computing needs, research instrument service agreements, and facility modifications related to the installation or housing of research equipment.  Requests to upgrade existing resources or to establish new ones are both appropriate.

Use of funds for personnel salaries/benefits or graduate student support is not allowed.   Purchase of personal computers or software for individual investigators is also not allowed.

As these are internal campus funds, no indirect costs will be charged.  Cost-sharing is not required, but is encouraged.

Review Process

A review committee, composed of faculty members representing a wide range of disciplines and key Office of Research members, will review the applications and rate them.   The Vice Chancellor for Research will make the final funding decisions.
